Mortimer Forest - Mortimer Forest |
We visited Mortimer Forest at the weekend equipped with both a print-out of location descriptions from this website as well as the forrestry commission's booklet - both of which we found almost completely impossible to use, presumably because a forest like Mortimer Forest grows and changes the landscape quickly. We walked many miles and managed to find ONE small site (and a few small specimens). As we had had a three hours' drive to get there, this seemed quite disappointing. A couple who had also come with the website printout walked towards us as we finally left and said they had not been able to find anything! We told them how to find the one site from which we had collected and felt at least reassured we weren't the only people trying in vain. |

Mortimer Forest by Andy & Gill - 28/07/2007 |
Spent a great day following your trail around the four Mortimer Forest locations.
Plenty of finds.
For info Location Two ( The Gorge ) has become far more over run with brambles than in your 2003 photos. Although some scree is still accessible it will soon require some major jungle warfare to remain a family friendly location. The small exposures down the gorge are no longer accessible because of the vegetation cover
Well worth the effort though as the sites are certainly still fossil rich.
